Learn How To Select Fonts For Your Website?

When choosing the font for your website, it’s important to keep in mind that you want your website to have a clean and professional look to it.  This is accomplished in many different ways, but the font you choose can have a huge impact on the look and feel of your site.  Choosing the right font will help your site look clean, professional and stand out from other sites on the net.

Keep in mind that when choosing your font, you need to read the license and be sure you are using the font within the license agreement.  While many fonts are available for free download, you may have to attribute the designer to use it on a commercial website.

As youpick the font for your site, there are several things to consider.  One of the first things to think about is whether the font you want to use is web safe or not.  When a font is considered web safe, it will show up the same across the many different web browsers.

There are a few ways to get around the differences that can change your font from one browser to the next, but there are a few that are safe for all the major web browsers.  Using one of the web safe fonts will ensure that your font will render the same way across all browsers.  These web safe fonts include the fonts:
·         Ariel
·         Comic Sans MS
·         Courier New
·         Georgia
·         Times New Roman
·         Verdana

Other things that you will want to consider when choosing the font for your website are the size of the text, the spacing of the characters and the line spacing.

 Text size

When choosing the size of the text on your site, you will want to break the site into three different text areas. You will want a text size for the main body text, the headings and the sub-heading text sizes.  Typically the main body text will be around 12px for readability.  If this is a little to big you can try the 10px for the body text.  For the headings most sites use a 14-18px size and the sub-headings are 14-16 px.  It may be necessary to try a few different sizes to find the ones that work the best for you.

   Character spacing

Text spacing and attributes also influence the look of your website.  Using BOLD, UNDERLINE or CAPITAL letters and spacing are some of the more common attributes.  It’s important to not over use these.  When they get used too much they can take away the attention from what you are trying to show the visitor.  Typically designers like to use just plain text for the body and save the attributes for headings and sub-headings.

    Line spacing

When choosing the line spacing for your site, the main thing to consider is the overall readability of your site.Usually additional line spacing is used to separate the Heading from the main body text and sub-headings from the body.  With a little time and consideration, it’s possible to find the best font for your site.
